Murray Gibertson

Murray's BE Civil (Hons) and MBA have been complimented by a very successful senior executive roles in Government and Local Government entities.
With over 15 years as Managing Director at G-Group Consultancy Ltd, I focus on delivering innovative and cost-effective solutions in concrete durability, activated carbon research and application, asset management, and full-cycle project delivery.
Our expertise encompasses concrete deterioration research, hydrogel technology, and advanced field-testing, ensuring extended service life for reinforced concrete structures. Also, we are committed to supporting bioresearch and commercialisation in production, application and problem- farming, food production, and contaminant adsorption.
G-Group leverages forward-thinking strategies and a results-driven approach to address complex challenges in infrastructure and asset management. By prioritizing smart and customized solutions, our team has developed a global reputation for enhancing reinforced concrete durability and delivering sustainable outcomes for diverse projects.
As Chairman of Activated Carbon International Ltd, I lead a talented and progressive team of experienced professionals. The Team is committed to leading the way in NZ becoming a user and exporter of ‘Green’ activated carbon instead of an importer of low quality (largely coal derived) activated carbon. We have developed partnerships with a range of Iwi and national and international stakeholders who continue to add significant value to our bioresearch and technology developments.

Marian Ioan

Marian is focused on enhancing bilateral relations between EU and New Zealand.
His core competence is heat transfer and sectors of business interest include trade and investment, particularly in technology and energy solutions.
Mr Ioan is also researching advancements in sustainable practices and innovation within the fields of district energy networks, green activated carbon production, and applications and advanced air mobility systems as a support link for remote communities.
His ACIL Director and facilitator roles align with his broader professional background that includes business leadership and international collaboration in technology and resource management sectors.

Tony Goodman

Raised on a sheep and cattle farm in Hawke’s Bay, Tony developed a deep understanding of New Zealand’s land and farming traditions from an early age. After seven years of dairy farming, he expanded into forestry, owning and planting a 200-hectare block of Pinus radiata. In 1967, he became one of New Zealand’s pioneering kiwifruit growers, reflecting a lifelong spirit of innovation and sustainability.
Over the years, his interests and skills have ranged widely—from early radio and telephone systems to aviation, where he has owned and flown his own aircraft for more than 30 years, accumulating over 4,000 hours in the air. A passionate gardener, hunter, and agricultural producer, he has always worked at the intersection of practical know-how and forward-thinking enterprise.
For four decades, he operated his own civil engineering contracting company employing up to 100 staff and a fleet of machinery. He also founded New Zealand’s first cable television network in Paraparaumu—Saturn—which later merged into Telstra, then TelstraClear, and is now part of Vodafone.
Today, his focus is firmly on renewable energy, particularly solar heating and electricity systems. Together with his wife, Hinerangi—a trailblazing Māori broadcaster and respected Māori leader who chairs numerous trusts—they direct Te Ara Ki Matariki Ltd, a business consulting and development company.
Their current projects include designing and constructing a 41-home papakāinga (Māori village) at Te Whaiti, and advancing climate change adaptation strategies addressing food, water, energy, fire, and storm resilience for small Māori land blocks. They are also leading the revival of New Zealand’s flax industry, developing sustainable products from fibre and plant-based substrates.
A dedicated advocate for sustainable development, Tony continues to drive the creation of a domestic activated carbon production industry aimed at adding value to local resources and strengthening New Zealand’s environmental resilience.

Mark Marfell

Mark brings significant leadership experience from his role as director at Kapiti Television Ltd, where he has developed skills in overseeing company operations and strategic management. These skills are directly applicable to his role as a director at Activated Carbon International Ltd (ACIL), where strategic oversight, governance, and business development are essential.
His directorship at ACIL since April 2025, coupled with shareholder status, indicates a vested interest and commitment to the company's success. While his media background is his most public professional facet, the leadership, governance, and operational management expertise he has cultivated support his effective participation in guiding a specialized company like ACIL in the activated carbon industry.
Mark has a particular interest in renewable energy by hydro, solar and wind. The provision of renewable energy is a key component of producing green activated carbon which requires high energy input when plants commence each production cycle.
ACIL benefits from Mark's strategic planning abilities and business acumen, which help drive the company's growth, market positioning, and operational efficiencies, critical for a company in a technical and environmental sector such as green activated carbon production and distribution. This combination of governance experience and strategic oversight underpins his value as a director to ACIL

Alexandra Gilbertson

Alexandra is a seasoned leader in resource management and sustainability with over 20 years of expertise guiding national policy, strategic initiatives, and award-winning environmental programs. Her strengths include risk management, site remediation, green solutions, compliance, waste management, environmental planning, and fostering partnerships with iwi and communities.
A trusted advisor, advocate, and project manager, Alexandra co-founded WasteMINZ and served on its Executive Committee. She has also contributed 15 years as a judge for Business Excellence Awards and as a mentor to emerging leaders. She led New Zealand’s pioneering Waste Plan under the Local Government Act 1996, earning recognition from the Minister for the Environment, and has managed major environmental projects such as the Whitford Landfill redevelopment and shaped national waste legislation through collaboration with government.
Appointed as an expert advisor for the MFAAT Pacific Initiatives Environmental NZAID Programme Specialist Advisory Group, she supports sustainable capacity building in Pacific communities. Alexandra’s global sustainability leadership is backed by farming experience and collaborations in international research.
As Director and Lead Researcher at Activated Carbon International Ltd, she advances New Zealand’s role as a producer and exporter of sustainable, high-quality green activated carbon, building partnerships with iwi and global stakeholders to drive innovation and reduce reliance on coal-based products.
Her approach integrates policy, science, and community collaboration to foster measurable environmental impact and resilient leadership.
